There is a tendency to describe AI’s impact on FP&A in sweeping terms. “Transforms everything.”
“Changes finance forever.” That is not useful. Three specific shifts are already happening, and they are
concrete enough to plan around.

The first shift:

Where analysts spend their time

Most FP&A teams run a hidden factory. Data is rekeyed from one system to another. Reconciliations happen manually. Inputs are chased across business units. Narratives are written from scratch each cycle. None of this is analysis. AI systematically removes this burden, classifying data automatically, detecting anomalies without human sampling, drafting variance commentary with traceable links to drivers. The time freed is not trivial. It is structural. Teams that were spending 60 to
70 percent of their capacity on production work can redirect it toward decision support.

The second shift:

Cycle time

FP&A today is largely calendar-driven. The budget cycle starts in September. The reforecast runs in Q2. The board pack closes on the 15th. These rhythms were set by the limits of manual processing, not by the pace of business. AI enables a shift to event-driven planning, where models update when signals change, scenarios are ready when decisions need making, and the close cycle shrinks from weeks to days. The function becomes responsive instead of periodic.

The third shift:

How users interact with the system

Historically, using an FP&A tool required technical fluency. Building models, configuring drivers, running scenarios all demanded specialist knowledge. AI changes this. Users shift from operating the system to working with it. Natural-language interaction means a business partner can ask “what happens to margin if we hire 20 people in Q3?” and receive a model-consistent answer without knowing how the calculation works. This brings FP&A capability to people who were previously excluded from it.
