The question keeping most CFOs and FP&A Directors awake right now is not “Will AI replace my team?” That question makes for a good headline and a poor agenda. The real question is harder and more urgent: is your function evolving fast enough to capture the value AI makes possible, and will your organisation be outpaced by those that are?

That reframe matters. It shifts the conversation from existential anxiety to operational urgency. AI is not an event that happens to FP&A. It is a capability your function can either build on or be bypassed by.

History offers a useful anchor. Every time a new computing paradigm has emerged, the same obsolescence narrative surfaces for finance. Spreadsheets were supposed to make analysts redundant. ERP was supposed to commoditise the function. Neither happened. The discipline absorbed new capabilities and became more valuable.
AI follows the same pattern. The objective of FP&A, helping leaders allocate resources, anticipate outcomes, and make better decisions, does not change. What changes is how the work gets done, how fast, and how much of it humans still need to touch.

Between 2028 and 2030, we expect AI adoption by the Office of Finance to transform the function.
