The opening question is not “what can AI do for finance?” It is “which decisions does our leadership team make badly, slowly, or without adequate information?” Start there. The technology is in service of the decision quality, not the other way around. This framing lands with a CFO, a board, and an IT function for different reasons and none of them require the audience to understand how AI works.
The Trust, Speed, and Relevance frame is useful here. Finance teams that cannot be trusted, that are slow, and that produce outputs leadership does not find relevant are already losing their seat at the table. AI investment is not a technology upgrade. It is a strategic capability investment in the function's continued relevance. Framed this way, the conversation moves from IT budget to strategic necessity.
